This kylix is inspired by the original amphora dating to ca 540-530BC which is in the British Museum. It is one of the masterpieces of the Athenian Exekias who together with the Amasis Painter, pioneered the black-figure technique in the second half of the 6th century BC. Penthesileia, the Amazon Queen, brough her Amazon warriors to help the Trojans to defend their city, following the death of Hektor at the hands of Achilles. She too was killed by Achilles. Exekias chose to depict the moment when Achilles is on the point of killing Penthesileia. His face is masked and still protected by his helmet. It was Hand made in Greece, diameter is approximately 8 inches. Our clay items are Hand painted and not fastly made, nor are they cheaply made of substitute materials such as resin. We stick to the materials and methods used by ancient Greeks and use only top quality ceramics and paints. Do not expect "perfection" as if these clay vases was not mass produced from a machine like many are, but by hand.(62)
